About Us
Welcome to Freed Produce Farms
Freed Brothers Farms is a multigenerational farm with over 100 years in Phelps County, Nebraska. In early 2018, Jenny, daughter of the youngest Freed Brother, got the idea to grow pumpkins, gourds, ornamental corn, and sweet corn. With her father’s blessing and assistance, in the spring of 2018 about an acre was dedicated to ornamental corn, sweet corn, pumpkins and gourds. In April of 2020 tomatoes and peppers were added, to contribute to a more diverse local food availability. As this specialty crop and market garden operation grows into the new Freed Produce Farms, additional produce products are in trial stages to become available such as green beans, cauliflower, broccoli, eggplant, strawberries, cucumbers and more!
Jenny’s educational background includes undergraduate degrees in horticulture and insect science with a minor in the Engler Agribusiness Entrepreneurship Program. Her master’s degree is in entomology with a focus on plant-insect interactions. Therefore, while the operation uses conventional growing methods, rest assured there is a focus on sustainability. Crops are grown at both the farm as well as urban agriculture in a residential setting in Holdrege. Much of the specialty crop growing utilizes drip irrigation to optimize and reduce our irrigation water usage. When practical and appropriate, strategies such as intercropping and crop rotation methods are used. The pesticides, insecticides, and herbicides, when utilized, are the safest possible to target the specific issue and only when necessary.
Pumpkins, sweet corn, and some of the produce is grown on the family farm north of Loomis. The remaining produce is grown in Holdrege. Total growing space between both locations is about 2 acres. Crops are grown directly in the soil. The next expansion project includes adding a high tunnel in Holdrege and at the farm north of Loomis.
Our dream includes converting most of the yard into more market garden space while intermixing a beautiful flowering habitat for our native insects and creatures; all while providing local, quality, sustainable products and produce.
For the 2024 season, we accept the Nebraska Farmers Market Nutrition Programs including Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program, WIC Farmers Market Nutrition Program, and Double Up Food Bucks.
